Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
Published on: September 9th, 2014
Summary (from Goodreads): One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor’s early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as The Travelling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor’s first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes tender, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.”
Book Beginning: The King stood in a pool of blue light, unmoored. This was act 4 of King Lear, a winter night at Elgin Theatre in Toronto.
Page 56 (35% I don’t want to spoil myself!): Layers of graffiti, unreadable names in puffy dripping letters across blackboards, old messages: “Jasmine I… if you see this, go to my dad’s lakehouse. — Ben.” Overturned desks. A fire had darkened a corner of a classroom before someone has put it out or it died on it’s own.
Thoughts: I don’t know why I didn’t pick this book up as soon as I saw it a few years ago. One of the settings is Toronto and it’s about an pandemic that turns Earth into a post-apocalyptic setting. How cool is that? I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Have you read this? What did you think?

Sounds like a riveting post-apocalyptic drama that I’d enjoy. I like books where several stories intermingle and move back and forth in time (if they’re done well and don’t get confusing!)
My Friday post features The River of Corn.

The intermingling is not confusing in this one. I find it’s done quite well although the change in eah chapter does come out of nowhere.

I’ve heard raves about this one even from people who aren’t huge post-apocalyptic stories. I love finding a book that just clicks with me!

It’s definitely not your typical post-apocalyptic story. It’s quite different which makes it quite nice 🙂
