Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan

Summary (from Goodreads): Machines Like Me occurs in an alternative 1980s London. Charlie, drifting through life and dodging full-time employment, is in love with Miranda, a bright student who lives with a terrible secret. When Charlie comes into money, he buys Adam, one of the first batch of synthetic humans. With Miranda’s assistance, he co-designs Adam’s personality. This near-perfect human is beautiful, strong and clever – a love triangle soon forms. These three beings will confront a profound moral dilemma. Ian McEwan’s subversive and entertaining new novel poses fundamental questions: what makes us human? Our outward deeds or our inner lives? Could a machine understand the human heart? This provocative and thrilling tale warns of the power to invent things beyond our control.

Book Beginning: “It was religious yearning granted hope, it was the holy grail of science. Our ambitions ran high and low — for a creation myth made real, for a monstrous act of self-love. As soon as it was feasible, we had no choice but to follow our desires and hand the consequences.” (pg. 1)

Page 56: “John was hoisting Mark onto his raw shoulders. I had to admire the father. There may have been wit to his methods which I’d failed to notice. He had got rid of me without a fight by making an impossible offer.” (pg. 56)

Thoughts: I’ve been seeing this book around for a bit but haven’t heard anything about it! It sounds like an interesting concept but the low reviews has me a little wary. I hope I can get to this before my library loan expires.

What are you currently reading? Does this book sound interesting to you?

  2. I can understand the low reviews. Based on that opening, it sounds like a book that’s going to require attention and patience in reading to parse through the dense writing (or it would for me, anyway). But I love the premise of it! Sounds like an interesting read. Hope you enjoy!

  3. Anne Bennett says:

The few books I’ve read by McEwan I’ve liked. Hope this one is good. My Friday Quotes
