Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin
Published on: January 10th, 2017
Summary (from Goodreads): A young woman named Amanda lies dying in a rural hospital clinic. A boy named David sits beside her. She’s not his mother. He’s not her child. Together, they tell a haunting story of broken souls, toxins, and the power and desperation of family.
Fever Dream is a nightmare come to life, a ghost story for the real world, a love story and a cautionary tale. One of the freshest new voices to come out of the Spanish language and translated into English for the first time, Samanta Schweblin creates an aura of strange psychological menace and otherworldly reality in this absorbing, unsettling, taut novel.
Book Beginning: They’re like worms. What kind of worms? Like worms, all over. It’s the boy who’s talking, murmuring into my ear. I am the one asking questions. Worms in the body? Yes, in the body. Earthworms? No, another kind of worms.
Page 56: There isn’t room in a body for two spirits, and there’s no body without a spirit. The transmigration would take David’s spirit to a healthy body, but it would also bring an unknown spirit to the sick body. Something of each of them would be left in the other. He wouldn’t be the same anymore, and I would have to be willing to accept his new being.
Thoughts: From the summary this sounds like it is going to be one interesting book that I can’t wait to dive into. Especially now that I read the first sentence and page 56. I love the writing style and I am interested in the psychological direction this short 192 page novel will go in.

I would have to be in a good place to read this one…it sounds frightening and dark. But…definitely one to keep in mind. Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “THE HEIRS”

Fascinating! I don’t often read ghost stories or fantasies, but this sounds like a good one.
