This week’s topic is Top 10 Books You Wish Had More/Less “X” In Them. I decided that one of the things I really really dislike in books is insta-love. There is no way after “knowing” the person for a day you would ultimately risk your life for him or there thoughts are just filled with how much love they have for the person. Like, chill. I mean, maybe it makes sense in YA novels because you know teenagers and hormones and stuff like that. But when it gets in the adult stage it’s unrealistic, is it not? I want to see the relationship building. I want them to be nervous and shy.

Another thing that I dislike in novels is love triangles. It seems to be a trope in YA novels to have love triangles. They are so over done. There have only been a few that I have enjoyed. The Grisha trilogy was one that I enjoyed but I still decided to list it down below. Another good one was in the Kiss of Deception because you don’t know who is who. I don’t know if that gets annoying in the second book as I haven’t read that one yet.

YES, I completely agree with these! Instalove is one of my least favorite tropes of all time. It’s almost never done well. I’m trying to think of an example of a time that it didn’t bother me, but I can’t think of any right now. xD I would definitely add When We Collided to your list.

I’m okay with love triangles when subtle, but mad crazy insta-love kills me. I agree with you on the Shatter Me series. That drove me up a wall with that series. Ug! Same with Delirium.

Yes I agree that some are okay if they aren’t too in your face and the main story line. And yes Shatter Me with Adam and Juliette was annoying as hell plus Warner in there. Ugh.

I don’t think that there was insta-love in Shadow and Bone. Insta-love was in Shatter me mostly and in Ignite me it had more from hate-to-love elements. But with the others I agree.

I loved everything about Shadow and Bone apart from the love triangle, but then later in the series it develops into a love square – WORST THING EVER! I definitely agree with your choices, less instalove and less love triangles would both be great things.

I don’t like either of those things either. I haven’t read Delirium yet, but BUMMER. I really like Lauren Oliver, so I was hoping to like that series.

I hear her other work is good, but this series wasn’t the greatest. Probably why I haven’t picked up the 2nd one in a few years.

Augh, I can’t stand instalove. It is very, very rarely done well, and the same goes for love triangles. Talk about a waste of my time, and the protagonist’s! Great choice for this week.

Sometimes I enjoy a love triangle but it has to be done well. It has to be awkward and not just “omg i love this guy but i also love this guy”. Life happens and love triangles are part of that but a lot of them feel so forced in novels. And I Darken has a really good love triangle in that brother and sister like the same guy and it was really important to the plot and I really loved it in that.

Great take on this week’s theme, Danica! I’m am so with on the love triangles in The Hunger Games and Twilight. So annoying and so unnecessary. I was never a big fan of Gale. I mean, they were friends – why did it have to be turned into something more. It was always going to be Peeta. What’s funny is that to this day my husband tells me it should have been Gale. And I keep saying, “no, they were Just Friends.” I think he does it to drive me crazy. 🙂

I hate love triangles with passion, they make me break out a rash! Yecccch!

I am currently reading the e-ARC of Red Sister by Mark Lawrence (coming out in April) no love triangles and romance in it, either, it’s quite awesome.
