The Diviners (#1) by Libba Bray
Published: December 3rd, 2013
This books been on my shelf for ages. There was a lot of hype around it in 2014 so when I saw it at a bargain price I picked it up. Then I never picked it up again… It is a hefty 500+ page book but I know the concept is great.
Synopsis: Do you believe there are ghosts and demons and Diviners among us?

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City–and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.

As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfurl in the city that never sleeps. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened….[x]

Book Beginning: The weekend before, she’d been forced to go antiquing upstate with her mother – an absolutely hideous chore, until they came upon a Ouija board. Ouija boards are all the rage; psychics have claimed to receive messages and warnings from the other side using Mr. Fuld’s “talking board”. The antiques dealer fed her mother a line about how it had come to him under mysterious circumstances.
“They say it’s still haunted by restless spirits. But perhaps you and your sister could tame it?”
Page 56: “You’re one of them, aren’t you, dear?”
“Miss O’Neil is Mr. Fitzgerald’s niece,” Mabel supplied.
“No. One of them,” Miss Addie said in an urgent whisper that sent a shiver up Evie’s spine.
Thoughts: I love 1920s New York with the flappers and the speakeasies. Messing with Ouija boards never turns out well I’m interested to see how this turns out!

  1. I am curious, but the 500 pages might keep me from picking it up right away…although some books with a lot of pages turn out to be quick reads because they are so compelling. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.
